Xylenes (dimethylbenzenes) are aromatic hydrocarbons consisting of a benzene ring and two methyl groups. The chemical formula is (CH 3) 2С6Н4.
Xylenes are obtained by coking coal or oil.
Petroleum xylene is an aromatic hydrocarbon that evaporates easily and quickly in the air and quickly reacts with other substances. It is obtained in the process of aromatization of oil fractions.

Characteristics and composition of the solvent

Petroleum xylene is considered a volatile substance, but it has a long and stable activity in chemical reactions. Due to the property of rapid splitting of fatty compounds, it is often used for processing and degreasing various surfaces.

Xylene – technical conditions

In its composition, xylene has three isomers. They are in the same amount, but have completely different properties. The composition of petroleum xylene includes:

• orthoxylol
• paraxylene
• metaxylene

For each of the isomers, the characteristic value is density (0.8802, 0.8642 and 0.8611 g/cm3 for o-, m- and p-dimethylbenzene, respectively), melting point (-25.2, -47.8, 13.26 °C) and boiling point (144.4, 139.1, 138.3 °C). Molecular formula of xylene: C6H4(СН3)2. Solubility in the aqueous environment is weak (less than 0.015%).

Such a special composition of petroleum xylene, which is manufactured according to GOST, makes this substance universal in application. It can be used for paints and varnishes.

Orthoxylol in its composition contains substances that can quickly dissolve varnishes or paints. Paraxylol consists of acids, which allows it to quickly react with fats. This isomer of petroleum xylene is aimed at fighting fat. Metaxylene acts as a chemical substance that contributes to the rapid interaction of reagents.
