The solvent must have a high dissolving capacity, a certain evaporation rate and low flammability, and the vapors must not be toxic. The rate of evaporation should not be too low, so as not to delay the drying of varnish films, but also not excessively high. After all, with rapid evaporation, traces of burst bubbles (mechanical damage) remain in the film, and in addition, as a result of excessively rapid evaporation of the solvent, the film can cool down a lot and moisture from the air condenses on it, which can lead to clouding of varnish films.
