It is a colorless or slightly yellowish liquid, which is easily recognized by its pleasant fruity smell. Practically does not dissolve in water.

Butyl acetate is widely used to obtain paint and varnish materials, as well as their dilution. However, this is far from the only field of its application. It dissolves fats, cellulose esters, oils, vinyl half measures, chlorinated rubber, carbiol resins, etc. Adding butyl acetate together with a small amount of butyl alcohol reduces the risk of white lacquer films. Butyl acetate is part of perfume compositions and fruit essences. It is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry for the separation of most primary substances during the production of antibiotics.

Butyl acetate formula

The solvent is obtained by esterification of acetic acid with butanol in the presence of H2SO4 acid at a temperature of 100-110°C using continuous technology.

The chemical formula of butyl acetate is C6H12O2.

The structural formula of butyl acetate is given below:

Butyl acetate and its main characteristics

If the manufacturer adheres to all standards in the production of butyl acetate, then this substance should have the following basic characteristics:

The liquid should be transparent and free of impurities.

The concentration of the main substance is not less than 99.0%.

Density 0.878-0.881 kg / dm3 at an ambient temperature of 20°C.

The water content is not more than 0.02%.

The molar mass of butyl acetate is 116.16 g/mol.

The boiling point is 126°C.

The smell of butyl acetate is fruity (pear with hints of barberry).

In other words, butyl acetate is called butyl ether of acetic acid. Butyl acetate is slightly soluble in water, miscible with vegetable oils and organic solvents.

One of the key characteristics of butyl acetate is its high chemical activity.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Production of butyl acetate

Butyl acetate belongs to the class of esters, which are most often obtained by heating a mixture of alcohols with organic and inorganic acids together, removing water by means of an esterification reaction (alcohol + acid = ether + water).

Butyl acetate (acetic acid ester), as well as ethyl acetate and methyl acetate, is obtained by reacting acetic acid with butyl alcohol.

However, the processes of butyl acetate production have their own peculiarities due to the low solubility of butyl acetate in water (0.6%), high boiling point, both in its pure form (126.2°С) and in an azeotropic mixture with water (90.2°С ), as well as the increased content of water in this mixture (28.9%) and an even higher content in the ternary mixture: butyl acetate – butyl alcohol – water (37.3%). Butanol also boils at a higher temperature (117.7°C) than ethanol and forms an azeotropic mixture with a very large amount of water (42.5%).

When using pure grades of acetic acid and butanol as raw materials, esterification is carried out continuously. The catalyst is sulfuric acid or ion exchange resins. During esterification with sulfuric acid, an excess of either acetic acid or butanol is created in the reaction zone, and with ion exchange resins, an excess of acetic acid is created.

Application of butyl acetate in various fields

Due to its physical and chemical properties, this substance is used in many industries, namely as a solvent for polymers, a component of food essences, and an extractant of aromatic substances.

It is important to note that there are two brands of butyl acetate – A and B. Brand A is suitable for the synthesis of chemicals, and brand B is used exclusively as a raw material for solvents. These two directions of use are the most common for butyl acetate.

Use of butyl acetate in the chemical industry

In the chemical industry, this substance is used as a raw material for the chemical synthesis of a number of compounds. Butyl acetate is also used as a solvent for chlorinated rubber and nitrocellulose, fats, cellulose ethers, oils, vinyl polymers, chlorinated rubber, natural and synthetic resins, etc.

Butyl acetate in pharmaceuticals

Due to its high chemical activity, butyl acetate is widely used in the pharmaceutical field, for the production of drugs, in particular antibiotics. It allows you to separate substances at the stage of preparation of raw materials.

Use of butyl acetate in the food industry

Due to its low toxicity, butyl acetate has also found its use in the food sector. Here it is used to create flavors and fruit essences. It is also used for the extraction of various substances, such as caffeine from coffee beans.

Butyl acetate in the paint industry

Up to 90% of all produced butyl acetate is consumed by the paint industry (enamels, paints, varnishes, primers, glues). This is the widest field of application of this complex ether.

Here it is used in the production of LFM and as a solvent for varnishes and paints, which is added to remove the film formed on their surface. In a mixture with ethanol, butyl acetate prevents the varnish film from acquiring a whitish shade. In addition, butyl acetate is added to paints immediately before painting. It is also used as a component of other multicomponent solvents (P-646, P-647, etc.).

Use of butyl acetate in the leather goods sector

This ether is used as a tanning agent, which is used to treat leather products in order to increase their strength and wear resistance. It is used as a reagent and solvent, which can be used on artificial or natural leather.

Butyl acetate and perfumery

Due to the fact that the smell of butyl acetate is pleasant, with fruity notes, it is often used in the perfumery and cosmetic industry to create perfumes, essences, etc.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

What are the advantages of butyl acetate as a solvent

The main advantage of butyl acetate is that it perfectly interacts with a huge range of organic and inorganic substances. It has an excellent ability to dissolve thickeners in varnishes, paints, enamels and primers, which is why it is part of most multicomponent solvents used in the paint industry and beyond.

Chemical compounds based on butyl acetate are able to dissolve almost any synthetic or natural resin responsible for film formation in paint materials.

The level of volatility of butyl acetate, which allows it to quickly evaporate after applying paint to the surface, deserves special attention.

Is butyl acetate harmful to the human body?

Acetic acid butyl ether, or simply butyl acetate, is a colorless liquid with a pleasant ethereal odor.

Compared to other solvents, butyl acetate is a low-toxic substance for human health. That is why it is widely used in the food, cosmetic and perfume industries.

However, the production process of butyl acetate and other technological processes using it are considered harmful and can have a negative impact on human health.

A vapor with a concentration of 2 g/m3 for 1 minute, and 1 g/m3 for 5 minutes, has a slightly irritating effect on humans. In case of exposure to 1.5 g/m3, complaints of slight irritation of the throat and eyes are possible. If butyl acetate is obtained from production waste, then a one-minute exposure to a solution with a concentration of 10-50 mg/m3 does not cause any effect. However, the substance derived from the ketone strongly irritates the mucous membrane at the same concentrations.

The threshold for the perception of the smell of acetic acid butyl ether is quite low and is only 0.5 mg/m3. It should be noted that butyl acetate can not only cause harm, but also lead to death. The lethal dose of this substance when ingested is 50 g. The limit concentration for water is no more than 0.3 mg/m3 for smell and 1 mg/l for taste.

Chronic poisoning with butyl acetate and local effects have not been studied in humans, but animal studies have shown that butyl acetate has a strong chronic effect. Poisoning significantly reduces physical endurance, it can cause rapid breathing, pulmonary edema, and disturbances in the functions of the central nervous system.

No cases of vapor intoxication were found among workers engaged in the production of butyl acetate. The maximum permissible level of release of vapors of this substance from building materials is no more than 0.1 mg/m3. Butyl acetate is also used as a food flavoring because it has a pleasant fruity smell. However, there is one condition – its content in the final product should not exceed 10 mg/kg.

In the case of local exposure of acetic acid butyl ether to a person, namely when it gets into the eye, a slight irritation is observed, which disappears after 1-2 days.

Safety measures when working with butyl acetate

Although acetic acid butyl ether is of low toxicity, it is important to observe the following safety rules when handling / producing butyl acetate:

Room ventilation – ensure good ventilation during the operation / production of butyl acetate so that harmful vapors do not linger in the room and do not exceed the maximum permissible concentration.

Use of protective clothing, gloves and respirators – with long-term use of this complex ester, it is necessary to take care of the protection of the skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Inhalation of large quantities of butyl acetate vapors may cause dizziness, nausea and coughing.

Proper storage – do not forget that butyl acetate is a strong solvent that can destroy plastic. Therefore, storage and/or transportation of acetic acid butyl ether is possible only with the use of metal containers.

Fire safety – the use / production of butyl acetate requires compliance with standard fire safety rules, namely: avoid direct sunlight on containers with this solvent, keep away from sources of fire and heat. If butyl acetate catches fire, it is important to remember that it is lighter than water, so foam or sand should be used to extinguish it.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Frequently asked questions about butyl acetate[/vc_column_text][vc_toggle title=”Why do you need butyl acetate?”]Butyl acetate is most widely used as a solvent or component of multicomponent solvents and for the synthesis of chemical substances.
