During the development of chemical compositions for degreasing or dilution of paint and varnish materials, it is necessary to know the corrosion activity of the used solvents when they affect the surface of metals.<\/p>\n
The indicator of the corrosive activity of solvents can be determined by the presence in them of active sulfur-containing compounds (hydrogen sulfide, mercaptans), naphthenic acids, alkalis, and water-soluble acids. For example, when you decide to buy solvent P 12, it will be enough to look at its composition to understand how aggressively it affects the surface of metals.<\/p>\n
The reason for the corrosive effect of many organic solvents (for example, chlorinated hydrocarbons, dimethylformamide) is the presence of a sufficient amount of moisture in them. Thus, the presence of water in dimethylformamide leads to the hydrolysis of the solvent with the active formation of corrosive-active formic acid. Trichlorethylene, containing a certain amount of water, during heating and under the influence of air decomposes with the release of phosgene and hydrogen chloride or dichloroacetic acid chloride. To prevent decomposition, triethanolamine is added to the substance at the rate of 30 to 150 grams per 1 ton of solvent. Copper, aluminum, iron, zinc are those metals that play the role of catalysts for the decomposition of trichlorethylene in the presence of moisture. Dry trichlorethylene is not able to cause corrosion of alloys and metals even when boiling.<\/p>\n
The rate of corrosion can increase when solvents are contaminated with catalysts. For example, when antimony pentaoxide and chlorine impurities get into chloroform, the corrosion process accelerates 7-8 times.<\/p>\n
