Most often, solvents are used for this, which are divided into the following categories according to their solubility:

Oil solvents – the basis of such substances are products of oil distillation, they have a low solubility. The main advantage of these solvents is low price and low toxicity, so they are very often used for cold degreasing of large volumes of surfaces. Degreasing is carried out using a rag soaked in a solvent (for example, gasoline or white spirit). The main disadvantage of this type of solvents is their flammability, so they are often replaced by chlorinated hydrocarbon or multicomponent solvents 647 and 648.

Aromatic hydrocarbons, esters and alcohols have an average level of solubility. Aromatic hydrocarbons have a fairly high level of toxicity, so degreasing is possible only in a mixture with aliphatic hydrocarbons.

Chlorinated hydrocarbons – in addition to hydrogen and carbon, chlorine is also included in the composition of such solvents, such substances have a high ability to dissolve. Tri- and tetrachlorethylene and methylene chloride are most often used. The advantage of these solvents is the possibility of their regeneration by distillation. Trichlorethylene is often used to degrease ferrous metals, but it is completely unacceptable to degrease aluminum products, it is explosive! Tetrachlorethylene is used to degrease aluminum surfaces.

Therefore, returning to the question “what is the best way to degrease the surface”, it is worth noting that in order to choose the best type of material for degreasing, it is necessary to pay attention to such factors as:

surface type;

nature of pollution;

type of further surface treatment.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

The importance of determining the type of surface before degreasing

There are many different types of surfaces that can be treated with paint and varnish materials. All of them require preliminary degreasing, however, it should be noted that the determination of the type of surface significantly affects the degreasing process and what to degrease the surface with!
Different types of surfaces and their characteristics

Metal – such surfaces are often found in various designs, are quite strong and yet have a tendency to corrosion and rust. White spirit, gasoline or acetone are usually used to degrease such surfaces. These solvents will not only protect the metal surface from corrosion processes, but will be able to remove already existing rust and traces of corrosion, which will significantly increase the level of adhesion after painting.

Plastic – this type of surface especially needs degreasing, because it sticks very poorly with other materials. However, the degreasing process needs to be approached very carefully here, because some plastics and solvents are simply not compatible (the plastic surface can be damaged due to the aggressive effect of the solvent).

Wooden – surfaces of this type are prone to decay and loss of their original appearance due to the influence of moisture and sunlight. It is because of this that degreasing of such surfaces plays an important role in creating the necessary level of adhesion between the wooden surface and LFM, which ensures reliable protection of wood for a long time. Quality cleaning of the surface from old layers of paint and varnish is also important.

Glass is a solvent-resistant surface, so different types of it can be used here.

Compatibility of degreasing solvents with different types of surfaces?

If you have the question “How to degrease the surface?”, then after determining the type of surface, you should choose the right tool for performing the work.

Among the substances most often used for defatting are:

White spirit is an organic solvent that has gained popularity due to its low toxicity. When degreased, it is often used for primary treatment of car bodies. After that, it can be used in a mixture with orthophosphoric acid for further, more thorough removal of impurities. This composition is safe for metals. The low price is one of the main advantages of this material, but there is a sharp smell, so sometimes consumers replace white spirit with trichlorethylene. It should be remembered that the use of trichlorethylene is impossible with aluminum surfaces due to the danger of fire.

Acetone, gasoline, other analogues – these materials are excellent solvents for paint, mastic and grease stains. After using solvent or gasoline, rinse thoroughly to remove all traces.

Anti-silicone – excellent for degreasing aluminum and steel surfaces, as well as for galvanizing and lacquer coatings.

Antistatic – usually used before applying acrylic paint to prevent the surface from becoming electrified. Often used on plastic surfaces.

Alkalis – chemical detergents with an alkaline effect are often used for the purpose of degreasing. They perfectly wash away all the dirt and are usually used for household purposes. A roller should be used to clean plastic or concrete surfaces. When using on the car body, you need to be careful and thoroughly wash the surface with water after degreasing. The product should be applied little by little, preventing foaming.

Ultrasound and electrochemical degreasing – this type of degreasing is carried out in special baths. The main advantage of this method is the degreasing of hard-to-reach parts and other objects.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

How to degrease metal?

For metal surfaces, white spirit is often used, sometimes replacing it with trichloroethylene (only if we are not talking about aluminum). Anti-silicone is used for aluminum surfaces.

It is also allowed to use alkaline detergents with great care and subsequent rinsing with water.

It is impossible not to mention the ultrasonic method of degreasing as an excellent option for metal parts with hard-to-reach elements.

How to degrease a plastic surface?

Due to poor adhesion to other materials, as well as a tendency to electrify, gasoline, vinegar and acetone (for some types of plastic) are used on this type of surface.

Soap solutions and technical or medical alcohol are also often used. Solvents should be used with caution, as they can have an aggressive effect on plastic.

Another way to degrease the surface is an antistatic agent that prevents the process of electrification.

How to degrease wood?

Universal solvents are used to degrease wood, which will help remove old layers of paint and varnish. It is important to note that with high-quality sanding with a brush, sandpaper and planer, it may not be necessary to degrease the wood.

How to degrease the glass?

Most often, acetone, alcohol or other solvents are used on these surfaces. This is explained by the fact that this surface is resistant to the action of various types of solvents.

Is it possible to degrease the surface with alcohol?

Yes, degreasing the surface with alcohol is permissible, medical or technical alcohol is usually used. Alcohol can be used on metal, plastic and glass surfaces.

It should be noted that the use of alcohol for surface degreasing is a rather outdated method, which is mostly used in everyday life.

In industry, more professional tools are most often used, including: various types of solvents, acetone, antistatic and antisilicone, etc.

Advantages of using solvents for surface degreasing

One of the main advantages of a solvent for surface degreasing is its volatility, that is, it evaporates quickly. Almost immediately after applying the solvent, you can apply the paint and varnish material on the already degreased surface.

Solvents will perfectly cope with any types of contamination and will provide a really high-quality final result of painting with a high level of cohesion (adhesion).[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Frequently asked questions[/vc_column_text][vc_toggle title=”How to degrease metal?”]To degrease metal surfaces, solvents (most often white spirit), trichlorethylene (except for aluminum surfaces), anti-silicone (for aluminum surfaces), alkaline detergents (with water rinse) are used.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”How to degrease wood?”]With high-quality sanding and preparation for painting, degreasing may be optional.
