They are necessarily needed in the process of carrying out repair and construction works, and at some enterprises, solvents are an indispensable component for carrying out production processes and manufacturing products.

Basic physical and chemical properties

The main feature of solvents is their ability to convert various substances into a liquid state without changing their chemical nature. For example, with the help of a solvent, various solid materials, resins, thick paste-like products can be given a fluid liquid state for some time at ordinary room temperature. This determined the main areas of application of solvents both for industrial purposes and in everyday life.

Although no chemical reactions occur during dissolution, this process is not simple. The interaction of a substance with a solvent occurs at the molecular level and is largely determined by the features of their elementary structure. During dissolution, the bonds between individual molecules of the pure component are destroyed and the forces of their interaction with the solvent substance are revealed. At the same time, the very nature of the interactions that arise largely depends on the properties of the molecules of each of them. Different combinations can create bonds of different nature – ionic, dipole, hydrogen bonds. Therefore, choosing the most suitable solvent for a specific material is not always a simple task.

Multicomponent solvents

To partially help consumers, multi-component mixtures have been created. Their composition includes several solvents of different nature. This increases the versatility of mixtures and allows you to strengthen the advantages of each component, leveling out their disadvantages. The most common multicomponent solvents are solvent, nefras, white spirit, kerosene, turpentine, numbered solvents (646, 647…651). Some formulations of multicomponent mixtures of volatile organic liquids have gained popularity as universal solvents due to a successful combination of characteristics and have been used for years both in everyday life and on an industrial scale.

One-component solvents

Single-component solvents are individual chemical compounds or narrow fractions of the distillation of petroleum, hard coal and natural resins. The most common single-component solvents are acetone, butyl acetate, xylene, orthoxylene, toluene, solvent, white spirit, ethyl acetate, ethyl cellosolve, ethylene glycol, ethoxypropanol, methoxypropanol (MOP), methoxypropyl acetate, perchlorethylene.

Use of solvents in industry

The industrial application of solvents is very diverse. They cannot be dispensed with in the synthesis of polymers, the extraction of useful components from reaction mixtures, and many other technological processes. Even the purification of food products (for example, oil) often takes place by the method of extraction from a solution. Solvents are widely used in the following industries: paint, shoe, and leather goods (as part of glues, paints, etc.); instrument and mechanical engineering (for cleaning parts of instruments and machines); in the production of organic synthesis; in the medical industry; laboratory work (for chromatography); in the automotive industry and other spheres and branches of industry.

Use in everyday life

In everyday life, solvents are often used in the form of various mixtures and multiple compounds, which are excellent for dissolving dry substances, removing unnecessary layers of paints and varnishes, smoothing strokes, removing irregularities and scratches, getting rid of stains, drops and leaks. In addition, in order to give paints, enamels, varnishes and primers the necessary viscosity for work, a suitable solvent is selected. This liquid also helps to clean and polish the surfaces of various working tools (spatulas, rollers, construction guns, sprayers, etc.)

Rules for working with solvents

Work with solvents should be carried out in a well-ventilated room. The solvent is added in small portions while stirring until the required consistency is obtained. It is mandatory to use personal protective equipment – gloves, suits, glasses.

If the solvent gets on the skin, immediately wipe the skin with a cloth and rinse with plenty of water. In case of contact with the eyes, they should be washed immediately with a large amount of water and immediately consult a doctor.

It should be stored at a temperature from -30 °C to +30 °C in a tightly closed container. Protect from direct sunlight and moisture, keep away from open flames and heating devices. Do not store in residential premises and in contact with various foodstuffs, even if it is a small container of 1 or 5 liters.
In the course of work, it is necessary to remember the fact that solvents are combustible substances, therefore, work should be carried out in ventilated rooms or in the open air. Do not smoke when working with the solvent.

Our company offers a comprehensive selection of solvents and thinners for customer needs.
